Salary to Hourly: Full Conversion Table

Convert any annual salary to hourly, monthly and biweekly pay, with your real rate after paid leave and after-tax figures by state.

Divide any annual salary by 2,080 to get the hourly rate — 40 hours a week for 52 weeks.

The third column is the one that matters when comparing offers: your rate against hours actually worked, once paid leave and holidays are taken out.

The "real rate" column assumes 15 days of paid leave and 10 public holidays. You are paid for 2,080 hours but work 1,880, so every hour you actually work is worth about 11% more than the headline figure suggests.

The formulas

Annual to hourly: salary ÷ 2,080 Annual to monthly: salary ÷ 12 Annual to biweekly: salary ÷ 26 Annual to semi-monthly: salary ÷ 24 Annual to weekly: salary ÷ 52

Biweekly and semi-monthly are not the same. Biweekly gives 26 cheques a year, semi-monthly gives 24 slightly larger ones — and two months a year contain three biweekly paydays, which is why some months feel unexpectedly comfortable.

Comparing a salary to a contract rate

Take the real rate from the table above, then multiply by 1.3 to 1.5.

The premium covers self-employment tax at 15.3% instead of 7.65%, health insurance you now buy yourself, retirement you fund alone, unpaid time off, and unbillable hours spent finding work.

Common questions

How do I convert an annual salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the annual salary by 2,080 hours, which is 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. For a more accurate figure, divide by the hours you actually work after paid leave and holidays.

Is biweekly the same as semi-monthly pay?

No. Biweekly means 26 paychecks a year, every two weeks. Semi-monthly means 24 paychecks, twice a month. Biweekly cheques are slightly smaller, and two months a year contain three of them.

What is the difference between my stated hourly rate and my real one?

Your stated rate divides salary by 2,080 hours. Your real rate divides it by hours actually worked — about 1,880 with typical paid leave and holidays — which makes it roughly 11% higher.
